Evolutionary Reason for Boredom
Wired to be Bored
Natural selection (aka Survival of the Fittest) believes that any characteristic of an individual which allows it to survive to produce more offspring will eventually appear in every individual of the species. Boredom, therefore, exists because it helped our species survive.
Boredom drove our ancestors to seek out novelty. They put their energy into trying new things, examining, thinking, creating, building, innovating, exploring and challenge themselves. When staying alive was a priority, allowing complacency (leading to boredom) was a potential threat to survival.
