Boredom commonly begins one to two years after you retire. It surfaces when you feel a lack of direction for your life. According to Mihaly, Csikszentmihalyi, author of Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience he found that boredom stems from the following things:

1. A lack of awareness of stimulating things to do in leisure; 2. A lack of intrinsic motivation. This refers to engaging in a behavior that is internally rewarding rather than seeking an external;
3. And in particular, self-determination to act on the desire to alleviate boredom. Self-determination means you can make a decision without influence from outside influence;
4. A mismatch between one's skill and the challenge at hand.
